Joplin: An Anniversary we will never forget…

“Volunteer House” at 2502 S. Joplin Avenue. Volunteers left messages, which were eventually preserved & moved.

May 22, 2011 started out as a typical Sunday here in Joplin.  John & I  were both home by late afternoon.  He was outside doing yard work and I was on my computer. I had the TV on in the next room, so on occasion a weather alert would break in about the potential for storms in our area. Here in Southwest Missouri in the past, thunderstorm/tornado watches & warnings were pretty routine for us. We experienced so many of them in this area that never materialized that we tended to downplay, even ignore them. On this day however, enough weather alerts started to come across the tv that we started paying a little closer attention. John was keeping an eye out on the weather while he was outside cleaning up the yard. Our neighbor was also doing the same thing next door and they were having a conversation about it, discussing the possibility of what weather might be approaching. At that point, it didn’t look like anything out of the ordinary. Boy, that would change more quickly than I could ever imagine. A little more time passed and it was at that point,  I heard something that made my skin crawl. It sounded like hail was falling to the ground, but it sounded almost like kind of a chewing, grinding noise. I had never heard anything like it before and it was eery, to say the least. And what made it all the more bizarre was that nothing was actually falling to the ground, no rain, no hail, no nothing. This was our first giant clue that something was seriously amiss.   Soon after that, it seemed like the whole world went quiet- the air was still and the air pressure was stifling, almost suffocating and it felt like the air itself was crackling. There were no sounds momentarily, no birds were chirping, no insects buzzing, all neighborhood kids & dogs had suddenly gone silent. And then, what seemed like out of nowhere, the winds picked up and it looked like a giant wall of gray mass was headed toward us. At this point, my memory went a little fuzzy, but I vaguely remember our local weatherman screaming on the tv to take cover and right after that the power went out. John, unbelievably, was still outside looking at the weather so I screamed at him at the top of my lungs to get in the house. The approaching storm was so loud I couldn’t even hear my own voice, but thankfully, John did and high-tailed it back into the house. We had no basement or any truly safe place to take cover, even our bathroom had a window, but we opted to take refuge there.  We must have both been suffering from kind of a “deer caught in the headlights” syndrome, because we both just foolishly stood in the bathroom, just standing there, staring out the window, watching the storm. In retrospect, of course we should have sheltered ourselves better, that is something we are now keenly aware of. Had we been directly hit by the tornado, there is no doubt we would have been badly injured. As we watched the storm rage on, I have never been so scared in my entire life. The sounds were beyond anything I have ever heard and the combined tunnel of wind & rain was twisting and  turning in every direction: up, down, left, right, sideways, simply defying gravity, there was just no sense to it. The trees were throbbing in our backyard and debris was flying past our window.  I cannot begin to describe how gut-wrenchingly awful those several minutes were as the tornado passed over us. It felt like it lasted hours and at one heart-stopping moment, it  felt like the house was being picked up off the foundation and setting back down again.  I wondered if the house was going to fall apart & be swept away, but thankfully, it stayed intact. Finally, mercifully, it was over and we had survived.

We walked outside after it was all over and were horrified by the debris and damage that lay around us, but had no clue of the utter obliteration that lay just a few short blocks from us. We live right off a main artery, a couple miles from I-44, so there were emergency vehicles of all kinds throughout that night, all night long, coming and going, I will never forget the sound of all the constant emergency sirens at the same time. There were so many emergency vehicles that they were lined up all the way down the road, as far as the eye could see. We would discover later that an EF-5 tornado had ripped through the heart of Joplin & was the deadliest tornado to strike the U.S. in over a half a century. It took 161 lives, injured many more and destroyed thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses. This town came together after the tornado to help and support each other like nothing I have ever seen before. Volunteers came from literally all ends of the earth to help and people from both neighboring communities and very far away sent all sorts of food & supplies, anything they thought could help, pulling items out of their own pantries to help however they could. That spirit of volunteerism & kindness will never, ever be forgotten and will be a constant reminder to always try and pay it forward to whoever may need help in life.

The hours, days, weeks and months that have followed the tornado have been a combination of hope, inspiration, gratitude, sorrow, hardship, challenges and every emotion possible. Each business and home that rebuilds is greeted with celebration and triumph. The fact remains that entire neighborhoods remain flattened, the barren landscapes are constant reminders of the challenges that we continue to face in Joplin. Personally, I have my good days and I have my bad days. Some days, I feel the overwhelming strength, hope and inspiration that has come along with everyone helping to rebuild our community and other days I am just miserably depressed from the loss our community has faced. It’s been a roller coaster ride of emotions for sure. Today, we take time to remember the anniversary of the tornado, it is a day we will never forget. We are Joplin and we will continue to recover, to rebuild, to rejoice and to persevere!

A Look back on the past year here in Joplin (all pictures taken by myself).

In front of our house. Hey, we’re Ok!!!!

Our storage unit in the middle (it’s the one with the car on top of it). The unit contained my deceased dad’s personal items, so we eventually reached it, got the car off of it & recovered what we could. The entire storage place was completely bulldozed away within less than two months after the tornado. Many units were left intact & untouched after the tornado, but they still got bulldozed away. It made me very sad and left wondering what happened to the owners of all these units. I’m sure that ones that survived were worrying about where to live, not recovering the units.

Harps Grand Opening in Joplin, My Deals and Experience

Saturday, 21 April 2012, 13:08 | Category : Harps, Joplin, My Store Deals

So, as some of you may know, a  new grocery store Harps opened up this week in the Joplin area (25685 Fir Road, Joplin, MO, The Village at Airport Drive). We’ve always needed more grocery stores in this area, but since the tornado with the loss of so many businesses, we’ve needed more options now more than ever.  Needless to say, Harp’s Grand Opening created a lot of excitement in the area. I drove up to the store about an hour and a half after they had opened and the parking lot was completely full. And not just full, but cars were parked in the grass and anywhere else they could possibly park!

When I walked in the store, I immediately noticed how bright and open it appeared. I really liked the lay out of the store, everything was pretty easy to find and the store had a very welcoming feel to it. And when I couldn’t find something, there was plenty of staff around to help me find it. There’s nothing more frustrating than wandering around aimlessly looking for one item and then not being able to track down someone to ask for help finding it.

I also liked that they had sale items clearly tagged with a bright pink color, so it made the sales items easier to spot.

Anyway, I didn’t really go to the Grand Opening to shop much, but I did pick up a few things while I was there (naturally!). And I didn’t even have to wait in line to checkout, it was fast and painless which is always a plus.  Here’s what I picked up:

  • Tyson Whole Chicken – $0.69 lb., They were already sold out of these, but they had a man standing in the meat section handing out Rain Checks to anyone that wanted one which made it easy.
  • 5 Dt Mtn Dew (2 liter) – $0.88 ea., I don’t indulge my diet mtn. dew habit very often, but boy, is it fun while it lasts. ;)
  • Vidalia Onions (approx. 5 1/b lbs.) – $0.59 lb., $3.37 total, Used $0.50/1 coupon (doubled), I’m making a French Onion Soup today in my crock pot, yum! :)
  • 6 Van Camp’s Pork n Beans – $0.39 ea.
  • Mezzetta Pepperoncini Peppers (16 oz.) – $1.00
  • Hiland Sour Cream & French Onion Dip (16 oz.) – $0.98 ea., Used $0.50/2 Hiland Sour Cream or Dip, any 16-oz 1/22 SS insert (doubled)
  • Pads – $2.75
  • Final Cost $14.30

Headed to Harps? Don’t forget to check out my Weekly Deals Post with coupon matchups, the latest ad is good through 4/24.

Note: This is NOT a sponsored post, I was not paid in any way to write this. I do not work for Harps, nor do I know anybody that works at Harps. I wrote this post simply because I was excited to have a new grocery store in the Joplin area and wanted to share my experience with others!

Operation Backyard Recovery: Free Trees in Joplin on Saturday 9am-Noon

The Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center program Operation Backyard Recovery kicks off this Saturday 4/21/12 and thousands of free trees will be distributed. The event runs from 9:00am to Noon at the following locations:
In Joplin

  • Cunningham Park
  • Parr Hill Park
  • 2608 S. Main

In Duquesne

  • City Hall

This initiative was started to help reconstruct Joplin. Along with the Free Native Tree Seedlings, Native Shrubs, Wildflower Seed and Birdhouses will also be distributed to those impacted by the tornado. See here for more details.

I live in South Joplin and when the tornado hit, it basically took away everything I was familiar with. It took away my neighborhood, it took away lives and it took away people’s homes along with the trees and plants, leaving scarred skeletons that used to be trees and barren land for miles around. So, to have events like this means more than words can ever express. Thank you Nature Center, the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri and all the people involved to bring this amazing recovery effort together.

Harps Grocery Store Opening in the Joplin area 4/18

Good news! Harps will be opening in the Joplin area this week, on 4/18/12. Their address is 25685 Fir Road, Joplin, MO (The Village at Airport Drive). They haven’t added the Joplin location to their website yet, but I would think they’ll be doing that very soon. You can view their coupon policy here. I’m hoping I’ll have time to stop in Harps on Wednesday and check it out for myself to see what deals they might have.  It’s great another grocery store will be available to the Joplin area, as we definitely need all the options we can get. And hopefully even more options will be available within the next few years. I don’t know about you, but I would LOVE to see a Hyvee open up a store here and I look forward on hearing any news when and where Dillons will be rebuilding.  I have contacted them several times since the tornado, but no new updates as of yet, simply that they will be coming back at some point in the future.

“Meet Your Refreshed Target” in Joplin, MO

Friday, 23 March 2012, 12:13 | Category : Joplin, Target
Tags : ,

So, I just wanted to mention that our Target here in Joplin has been updating its store the last couple of months to include Fresh Grocery products such as Fresh Produce, yay! And that is such great news, because we definitely need all the grocery shopping options we can get. And apparently Springfield has been undergoing the same transformation, so yay for Springfield too! :) Our Joplin Target has had a big part of the grocery portion of the store blocked off so they could get it ready and the selection has been pretty sparse (and don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining, totally expected when a store is undergoing a transformation as big as this), so I am VERY excited to see the finished results.

And a head’s up! I got my mail earlier today and I got a flyer from Target saying “Meet Your Refreshed Target, It’s Fresh, It’s Ready Sunday, March 25″ and to get a preview of the store, to go to Target’s site and check it out. And here’s the fun part, the flyer had a peelie coupon attached for a FREE Loaf of Market Pantry Sandwich Bread. No purchase necessary, good 3/25-4/2/12, maximum value $2.99. So, Joplin residents, keep your eye out for this flyer in your mailbox for your free loaf of bread. :)

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Joplin, MO Airs Tonight 7:00pm Cst (Series Finale)

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s Joplin, MO episode airs tonight 1/13/2012 from 7:00-9:00pm Central. Sadly, as it turns out, this will also be EMHE’s  Series Finale, so the Joplin episode ends up being the final episode. At least EMHE will be back for an occasional holiday episode, so that will be something to look forward too. While I am very sad to see such an excellent & inspirational program end, I am so proud that the Joplin episode gets to be the Final Episode. EMHE came to Joplin with an astounding commitment to build 7 Homes in 7 Days and they did it, thanks to their incredible sponsors &  to all the many volunteers who came from all over the world to help! I was blessed to be able to volunteer myself and am so grateful I got to participate in this amazing experience in helping build these homes for the families that lost so much in the May 2011 Tornado.

I also got to be there on the day of “The Big Reveal” which was so very exciting, it was especially awesome  seeing the looks on the families’ faces when they got to see their new homes for the first time. Unfortunately, my camera died that day, so I didn’t get too many pictures taken, but I was able to snap this fun one of Paul DiMeo (he was so nice to everyone, especially the kiddos).

Also, John & I happened across their bus the first day they came into Joplin and we followed them around while they drove around Joplin (instead of “Move that Bus” it became “Follow that Bus”). ;) They eventually stopped at the Fema housing village that had been set-up for the tornado victims where they stopped & surprised one family with the news that they would be getting a new home.

I know it will be such an incredible episode tonight, so don’t miss it! It’s hard for me to describe in words what it means to us here in Joplin for everything that EMHE & many others have done. It provided a lot of hope that things could indeed get better. I cannot explain what it’s like to drive through a town everyday that is no longer there, so when new homes are built, when the damaged & scarred homes are repaired and when businesses come back, they are all very meaningful signs of hope for us. ♥

6 Months Later here in Joplin…

(taken by myself shortly after the tornado out where our storage unit used to be)

Six months ago on a Sunday evening, a deadly EF5 tornado ripped through Joplin, Missouri, forever changing everyone’s lives here. May 22, 2011 seemed just like any other day, some people were out shopping, some visiting friends & family, some celebrating big events like high school graduation and others like myself who were simply preparing for the week ahead, little realizing what lay ahead for all of us. I would like to take a moment to remember the 161 lives that were lost. I have prayed a lot over the last few months and continue to do so for those that were lost and for those that are still recovering either physically, emotionally, mentally, or in many cases, all of the above. In some ways, this has been the longest six months I can ever remember going through. On the other hand, I cannot believe an entire half a year has gone by since the tornado, especially in the busy hustle-bustle of this holiday season. I have thought about the tornado and all that has happened since every single day and countless times I have sat down to write about my experiences, but countless times I walked away from my computer, deleted numerous drafts & in some cases simply collapsed in tears, unable to write a single word. I just wasn’t ready to talk about it, it all just seemed too raw to put into words, I wasn’t even sure how to start. But now, from time to time, in the coming months I’ll be setting some time aside to share my own thoughts and experiences starting the day of the tornado and going on from there. I hope in sharing, perhaps others will feel free to share as well. I think the more we talk about our experiences, the more it helps us heal. More to come soon…

Joplin: 3 Month Anniversary Today…

I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the fact that it has been three months today since the massive tornado ripped through Joplin on May 22, 2011 and changed our lives forever. I was sitting here this morning at my computer going about my daily routine when the weekly tornado drill siren went off this morning here in Joplin (which it does every Monday morning at 10:00am). My fingers froze on my keyboard as I thought about everything that has transpired during & since the tornado, feeling, well, I think every possible emotion one person can have at one time. While I still feel such an immense feeling of sadness & grief for the loss of life, the injuries and all the daily struggles since the tornado I am also filled with hope for what lies ahead. So many people here in Joplin, admidst getting their own lives back in order, have pushed aside their own struggles and have done everything they can to get Joplin onto the road of recovery as quickly as possible. Not only that, but people from all over the United States and around the world have helped in any way they could and that has been nothing short of astounding. I would like to point out a couple celebrations that are going on today, feel free to share any other events coming up in Joplin:

  • Walgreens Grand Re-Opening Event 8/22/11 from 4:00-8:00 pm: Walgreens Celebrates Re-opening of Two Joplin, Mo. Stores. The one on Rangeline was completely destroyed & the one on Main Street was heavily damaged. The location at Range Line Road and 20th Street was completely rebuilt from the foundation up at a pace faster than any other store in the company’s 110-year history. Today, Walgreens will mark the re-openings with ceremonial ribbon-cuttings at both locations at 4 p.m., kicking off a host of community activities through 8 p.m. The events will include music, free food and giveaways, kids’ crafts and face painting, free blood pressure, blood glucose and bone density checks and free diabetes consultations from local physicians.
  • Joplin Tea Town USA Celebration at Cunningham Park 8/22/11 from 6:00-8:00 pm: Everyone is invited to this event , it starts at 6pm at Cunningham Park. Free Tea and Cookies, prizes to be given away! And an Awards Ceremony with a $15,000 Check to be given to Cunningham Park! Also in news related to Cunningham Park, you can vote for Joplin’s Cunningham Park to win a $100,000 Grant from Coca-Cola HERE, they are currently in third place.
