Kroger announced today they will no longer sell Ground Beef Made with Lean Finely Textured Beef, also known as “Pink Slime.” Kroger, the nation’s largest traditional grocery retailer, employs more than 339,000 associates who serve customers in 2,435 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states under two dozen local banner names including Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Jay C, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s. Several other stores have also jumped on the bandwagon to stop selling Ground Beef with “Pink Slime” including Safeway, Winn-Dixie, Bi-Lo, Giant/Martin, Stop & Shop and others. What is this stuff, you ask? Termed “Lean, Finely Textured Beef “(LFTB), it is a cheap filler made from beef “trimmings” which is then treated with ammonia. To find out more, you can simply google “pink slime” and you’ll get more information than you’ll probably ever want to know.
